About South Pacific Islander Organization
South Pacific Islander Organization (SPIO) is a 100% volunteer-led 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to building global Pacific Islander presence across academic and professional fields through digitally accessible resources. Our resources include college application mentorship, a spotlight program, a directory of educational resources, a digital network, and a Virtual Summit.
About the 2021 Scholarships
SPIO offered three (3) scholarships:
One (1) Academic Scholarship - $5,000 USD
One (1) Extracurricular Scholarship - $5,000 USD
One (1) Community Leadership Scholarship - $5,000 USD
The scholarships were eligible to any scholars of Pacific Islander descent planning to attend an accredited institution of higher education during the 2021-2022 academic school year. The scholarships were open to any Pacific scholar, regardless of where they lived in the world.
Who funded the 2021 scholarships? Our 2021 scholarships were funded by individual donors and Nike’s Until We All Win campaign.
Our 2021 Applicant Pool
We received over 40 applications from around the world.
18 academic scholarship applications
11 extracurricular scholarship applications
12 community leadership scholarship applications
Scholars represented the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kingdom of Tonga, Guåhan, American Samoa, Palau, Hawai’i, Rota, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Tahiti.
Our Scholarship Team’s Biggest Takeaways
We celebrate the accomplishments of our Pacific scholars and applicants.
We could only offer three scholarships out of a pool of inspiring global Pacific Islander leaders. This year’s applicants had truly incredible stories, insights, and a shared desire to uplift the community.
In 2022, we hope to offer more scholarships.
Our goal for the future is to continue offering our annual 3 $5,000 scholarships, but we would like to offer additional scholarships to support more scholars.
